Always change your oil and filter together for maximum protection. When removing the old filter, expect some oil spillage—have a drain pan ready. Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the new filter’s gasket before installation, and hand-tighten only until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then turn an additional 3/4 turn. Over-tightening can damage the gasket and cause leaks.
